Chapter 16
When Sierra woke up on Saturday morning, she was smiling. It was one of the Saturdays she wasnât working, thank God.
Yesterday certainly hadnât gone as expected. She was still a little pissedâonly natural when your relationship of over a year went down the toilet, even if youâd been thinking of ending it anywayâbut last night, surprisingly, had been one of the best nights of her life.
Sheâd barely let herself fantasize about sex with Jake Tong, and the real thing had been mind-blowing. Not that sex had been bad with Colton; sheâd enjoyed herself. But with Jake...that was in a different league. She shivered as she remembered the hungry way heâd looked at her.
She opened her eyes, expecting to see him beside her, but there was no one else in bed. Had she imagined yesterday? Had it been a particularly vivid dream?
She was definitely in Jakeâs room, though, with Big Freddy in the corner.
When I see it, I think of you, and I smile.
The memory of those words made her feel all gooey inside.
But where on earth was Jake?
Since none of her clothes were in the bedroom, she peeked in his closet and pulled out the first dress shirt she found. A light blue one. She pulled it onâit landed just past her assâand buttoned it only partially before descending the stairs.
He wasnât on the second floor.
Or the first floor.
She recalled the morning sheâd woken up in Coltonâs bed, only to be told he was already gone on a business trip. Had Jake simply left?
Then she heard an odd sound coming from the basement.
* * *
Jake was releasing his frustration by using his power tools.
Heâd considered a run, but he didnât want Sierra to wake up in an empty house. He assumed sheâd be able to find him down here. She wouldnât be able to hear the noise from his bedroom, but when she came downstairs to fetch her clothes, sheâd hear.
And then, if she wanted to leave without a word, she could.
Or if not...
Clearly, sheâd chosen the latter option. Sheâd just stepped into the basement, not wearing her own clothes but one of his shirts.
Christ.
He turned off the circular saw before he injured himself.
Jake hadnât been unhappy to wake up with Sierra in his bed, but then the circumstances of last night had come back to him.
âGood morning,â she said.
âMorning,â he responded gruffly, trying not to look at the peaks of her nipples, which were pushing against the blue fabric.
She walked to the corner and peered at a small table. âThis is nice. You made it?â
âYes.â
âFrom lawyer to carpenter?â
âItâs not exactly a full-time job.â
She waltzed toward him; he gripped his workbench.
âYou like my outfit?â She reached out and poked his chest. âI think you do.â
âStop it,â he growled.
She stepped back. âWhatâs wrong? We had a good night together, didnât we? I was disappointed you werenât in bed this morning, to be honest.â
âLast night shouldnât have happened.â No matter how fucking good it had been. Heâd told himself that he didnât have to hold back anymore, but heâd been wrong.
